The Homestay Program
The goal of Sikkim Himalayan homestays is to promote community based tourism while helping local communities benefit fully from the economic opportunities of low impact tourism. In this way, the spectacular environmental and cultural heritage of these areas can be protected for future generations and tourism can develop to meet the needs of local communities. |
History
Sikkim Himalayan Homestay was an initiative the KCC began in 2002. The initiation of the homestay allows the community to benefit from tourism. The homestay operators are chosen from houses which are not large enough to be hotels but are clean and comfortable enough to host up to 4 guests only. The homestay program provides guests with a traditional experience. In addition, it is a source of sustainable income for the villagers. It thus allows for mutual benefits to the local community as well as the visitors. KCC provides trainings for Homestays operators in the region to spread its cultural perseverance awareness and promote fair treatment to hosts instead of degrading Homestays to be bunk lodgings. |
Booking a Homestay Experience
The homestay experience is what makes community-based ecotourism in Sikkim really unique. The different kinds of homestays in Sikkim in each homestay will get a chance to experience life with a local family. In return, you will be sharing the benefits of ecotourism with the community.
